HOW ABOUT THAT a little Portuguese word that's gone mainstream!
I'm getting Goose bumps! Isn't it lovely when your hunch is right! Thinking about these wonderful Portuguese wine varieties or "castas" like "alvarinho" used in Vinho Verde. My new favorite is "viognier" that has been smitten with the Alenquer terroir and is usually aged in both stainless steel and French oak for six months.

I suddenly had an ah ha moment AND I was right - "The word caste is NOT a word that is indigenous to India. It originates From the Portuguese word casta which means race,breed, race or lineage."

Speaking Spanish

Remember that Lisbon is in Portugal and the official language is Portuguese. You don’t have to speak the language when you visit the city, and you’ll do fine communicating in English. Unless you’re Spanish, Hispanic, or a fluent Spanish speaker, don’t speak Spanish (often bad Spanish) in order to avoid offending cultural pride. Although most Portuguese are able to decipher Spanish (apparently Spaniards have a harder time understanding the guttural sounds of Portuguese), having a tourist thanking with “gracias” instead of “obrigado” can offend the biggest nationalists who’ll remind you that Portugal has its own Iberian language, and that it’s one of Europe’s oldest cultures and nations, founded over three centuries before Spain. Also remember that it’s the castle of “São Jorge” and not “San Jorge” and the nightlife neighborhood is “Bairro Alto” and not “Barrio Alto.”

Most of the restaurants from Rossio Square to the riverfront Comercio Square cater to tourists. There are of course a few exceptions, but these restaurants serve mediocre food, the service is often poor, and they prevent you from exploring the city’s real cuisine. The restaurants to avoid are the ones with waiters standing by the door trying to persuade you into going inside, and the ones with illustrated menus (usually of tourist-friendly pastas and burgers) by the entrance.

It’s the Tagus, Not the Atlantic or the Mediterranean

Lisbon stands where the Tagus River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It’s such a wide river, that many people think they’re looking at the sea. If you take the train to Cascais, you’ll see that it does become the Atlantic after you pass the Belem Tower, officially it is at Oeiras but in the center of the city, it’s still a river. With Portugal being a Southern European country, many tourists have also reportedly thought they’re standing by the Mediterranean. Other curious mistakes is thinking that the southern bank of the river is Algarve or the island of Madeira. It’s actually Almada, another city.

When waiting for a tram or bus, the Portuguese line up and enter the vehicle by order of arrival. Apparently this is not common practice in other countries, and many tourists often just run inside in front of everyone else, leaving the typical old local ladies complaining about your bad manners. This is a tip that doesn’t come in most guidebooks, but it should.

Tasca da Esquina – Vitor Sobral’s Version of a Corner Tavern
Everything Mega-Chef Vitor Sobral does is about taking rich Portuguese flavors and transforming them into modern tastes and textures. His current stage for displaying his talents is Tasca da Esquina, a small, but very popular, corner cafe in Lisbon.
Old Portuguese taverns (or tascas) are known for serving up traditional “comfort food”. For Tasca da Esquina, Sobral renovates an old corner space in a building in the Campo de Ourique area, creating a sparkling fresh restaurant, while maintaining the essence and soul of old tascas.

Mackerel in pomegranate marinade
Sautéed squid with mushrooms
Pastry of bull’s tail

Crispy shrimp with ginger jelly
Codfish with bacon, and sweet potato and tangerine cream

To complement each course or dish, Tasca offers a fine selection of national and international wines. And, as with their petiscos tasting menus, wines can be poured by the glass….which further enhances your tour of Portuguese tastes.
Sobral was raised in the Alentejo region, the farm land between Lisbon and the Algarve in the south. His earliest memories of flavors from here are combined with modern cooking techniques to create cuisine that is embraced by critics and foodies around the world. Toss in some seasonings discovered in Brazil and other former Portuguese colonies, and Sobral offers a pure Luso dining experience. In fact, in 2006, he was decorated by the President of the Republic of Portugal with the Office of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator for his work in promoting Portuguese cuisine and Portuguese food products abroad.

Lisbon Lights Up For Christmas

Lisbon’s Christmas lights were switched on this weekend. Budget cuts canceled the annual gigantic Christmas tree but the streets downtown and in major commercial areas are now lit up and decorated with the spirit of the holiday season.

The biggest attraction is Rossio Square, where an ice skating rink and a merry-go-round have been placed. Perhaps this funfair atmosphere was not the best choice for the city’s most historical square, but it did attract hundreds of people this weekend, and will continue to do so until January 9th.

A New Look at the Design and Fashion Museum Collection

Lisbon’s Design and Fashion Museum is always free, and this month (until January 30th) you may see part of the collection rearranged by Tenente, one of Portugal’s top fashion designers. He selected about 30 outfits by some of the world’s top designers, from Christian Lacroix to Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, and Jean Paul Gaultier among others, and presents some of his own creations as well.

Architecture Triennial Exhibition in the Berardo Museum

The Berardo Museum of Modern Art is one of Lisbon’s major cultural attractions, and it’s taking part in the city’s architecture triennial. This exhibition (which is free just like the rest of the museum) discusses the world’s housing conditions based on the specific needs of each region of the globe, and how architecture is defined by local solutions.

The Golden Age of Portuguese Art

The Ancient Art Museum is presenting an exhibition about the “golden age” of Portuguese art (the artists and works created between 1450 and 1550). The stars of the 160 pieces on display are the famous “St. Vincent Panels” which are always a highlight of the museum, but here they’re “dissected” and explained through infrared images.

Most of the other works are part of the museum’s collection, but many were also brought from the Évora Museum, while others are Portuguese works now found in museums in Italy, France, Belgium and Poland.

This exhibition is free if you go on a Sunday until 2PM.

The International Urban Culture Festival

The Lisbon International Urban Culture Festival is taking place around the city until December 11, and one place you should not miss is Palácio Verride, a pink palatial building by the Santa Catarina viewpoint where dozens of Portuguese and foreign artists present their work. The program includes performances, workshops and themed exhibitions, all related to urban culture and contemporary art.

Christmas Concerts

Lisbon’s annual Christmas concerts in several of the city’s churches are back. Among the locations is Memoria Church, for a concert at 4PM on Saturday the 11th, Graça Church on the following day at the same time, Estrela Basilica on the 17th at 9:30PM, and chamber music in São Domingos Church on Sunday the 19th at 4PM.

New Wine Bar in Lisbon “Grapes & Bites” –

Image by your-lisbon-guide via FlickrMost of the bars in Bairro Alto are known for their cheap beer and caipirinhas, but the newest openings seem to all be devoted to wine. The latest one is called “Grapes & Bites,” and despite the English name it only serves Portuguese wines and “petiscos” (snacks).

There are close to 200 choices, many from the bottles on display, others presented on the wine list. They can be served by the glass or bottle.

There are also cocktails, but all made with national wines. To accompany the drinks there are cold cuts, Portuguese cheeses, bread and jams.

It took over the space of a former streetwear boutique, now decorated with big wine barrels standing as tables under the arched interior.

It surprisingly opens every day, even on Sundays, from 2PM to 2AM.

It’s located in the neighborhood’s trendiest shopping street, Rua do Norte, number 81.

When in Lisbon visit the many museums in the city. The Gulbenkian Museum has an incredible collection of art. Art lovers should also visit the Berardo Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art during Lisbon travel. The National Azulejo Museum, Coach Museum or Tile Museum, should be visited during Lisbon vacations. It has a wonderful collection of religious, decorative tiles many which were made in Lisbon Portugal.

Discover the city’s narrow streets and many barrio’s, or quarters, that have made Lisbon tourism famous. With over 20 centuries of history Lisbon travel offers guests a look back into the past that shaped the country. The old quarters of Mouraria and Castelo are perfect for interesting day trips. Lisbon travel is excellent in June as the streets come refreshingly alive with feats that honor patron saints. People come out in festive moods and walk through medieval streets celebrating. Alfama is also a great area to celebrate in at this time of year. It’s one of the biggest tourist attractions and one of the oldest quarters of the city.

Lisbon vacations should include a walk to the Tagus River where there are a variety of leisure areas and historical monuments to see. Here you can view the Torre de Belem in all her glory and get great views of the city. A short walk from the tower is the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos which is a highlight of Lisbon tourism. This historic monastery’s architecture and mere presence awe people during Lisbon vacations.

Lisbon’s Top 5 Summer Rooftop Terraces: "

Because summer in Lisbon lasts until October, there’s still plenty of time to enjoy some of the best spots of the season. Of the many terraces in the city (from outdoor cafés to riverfront restaurants), the ones to seek this summer are high up on the rooftops, offering views, cooler air, drinks, and relaxation after a day of sightseeing, meetings, or work:
SKY BAR

It was one of the most talked-about bars last summer and it’s back this year. The views alone are worth a visit, but then there is also a good variety of cocktails (including a couple of non-alcoholic choices), soups, salads, wraps and noodles. It’s found at the top of the Tivoli Lisboa Hotel and it’s especially recommended late in the afternoon, staying for a light dinner as the sun sets followed by late-night cocktails.
BRASSERIE ROSSIO

It’s one of Lisbon’s newest restaurants in one of the city’s newest hotels (Altis Avenida). So not too many people know that from here there are beautiful views of downtown all the way to the river, standing above Rossio Station and Restauradores Square. Although the dining area is indoors (but still offering views through its glassed walls), tables and chairs have been placed on the terrace so you can enjoy a light meal or simply a drink at any time of the day. And that’s open to everyone, including non-hotel guests.
NH LIBERDADE

Right in the center of Lisbon’s busiest avenue, Avenida da Liberdade, is one of the city’s top secrets. It’s on the top floor of the NH Liberdade Hotel, a terrace with a pool open to non-hotel guests. For 20 euros (quite reasonable for a hotel pool in the city center), you can spend the day diving and swimming surrounded by city views. When you need to regain some energy, there are salads, sandwiches, juices and beer to enjoy poolside until the sun sets.
TERRACE

It’s quite small and all the seats are usually taken when you get there, but it’s worth waiting for a spot at this rooftop bar in the Bairro Alto Hotel. Recommended for the afternoon, the drink to get on the hottest days is the “granizado,” a crushed ice and fruit blend.
ENTRETANTO

Perhaps the best-known of all Lisbon’s rooftop terraces, “Entretanto” of the Hotel do Chiado is nontheless looking to surprise its guests. It’s offering a “happy hour” late in the afternoon which actually lasts for more than 60 minutes, allowing you to enjoy special drinks and snacks at more reasonable prices. To accompany them are fantastic city views, from the castle to the top of the triumphal arch of Comercio Square.

To Kiss or Not to Kiss: Top 10 Tips for Greeting Fellow Europeans: "

1. Learning a Few Key Phrases

Greetings can take many forms, but there is nothing more universally appreciated than an attempt to engage a wine lover in their native language. “A trick to engage someone [in Greece] is to use some Greek words, even just a basic Kalimera (good morning) or Kalispera (good evening) will work wonders,” says Markus Stolz of Elloinos.com .

Suggestion: For those of you who are currently breaking out in hives, panicking that you’ll butcher said language into a mangled pile of unrecognizable verbal goo, rest assured that you’re far from a pioneer. Many before you have mistakenly mispronounced greetings such as, “Calimari” for “Kalimera”, leaving your new Greek friends looking rather befuddled at your greeting of “Fried squid”! No harm done, though, and generally a good laugh will be had by all. The key to success is through practice, and well…failure. So keep at it!

After verbal greetings, the handshake is by far the most common form of greeting among both males and females in Europe. This is especially true for the first meeting. “In England, adults, across all levels of society, handshake on greeting and on parting. Small digression here. I read an interesting book on body language, which included handshakes: UK is a brisk couple of shakes, American is a long pump-action that can be disconcerting to Brits and Europeans who want to get on with life, German is a single hard downward yank,” states Kathryn McWhirter & Charles Metcalfe.

Suggestion: My advice is to go for the firm grasp instead of the wet noodle handshake. I would rather put my hand on ice after having it broken in 15 places than feeling as if I just shook hands with overcooked udon. And if you’re wondering whether Obama had any impact in spreading the fist bump throughout Europe, the answer would be emphatically, no! Though the secret handshake is making a fabulous comeback. Just remember, go into every handshake with strength and confidence.

3. Air Kissing

There are many places throughout Europe that a kiss on either cheek is common when greeting one another, particularly after the first meeting. In Spain, Portugal and Italy, for example, it is common to brush cheeks and make a kissing sound – though if the mood strikes, don’t be surprised if lips “magically” find their way on bare cheeks. Per Karlsson of BKwine.com suggests that, “in France, the lips never (never!) touch anything, nor cheek, nor lips. You touch cheeks and make a kissing sound!”

Suggestion: Remember that the air kissing sound should never make someone fear that an industrial sized vacuum is about to suck their brains out, nor should it be reminiscent of a nail gun. Between both extremes lies the perfect auditory pitch to make your new international friend come back for seconds.

4. Kissing Wars

If a culture embraces kissing as a form of greeting, one of the most difficult lessons is to learn how many and to whom! “In the south of France, where I live, it’s three, in Burgundy, the Jura and Paris (Bordeaux and Champagne too, I’m sure) it’s two. In some regions just outside of Paris, the number is four!!? That is exasperating as by the time you are done you practically have bruises on your cheek,” says Amy Lillard of La Gramiere.

Suggestion: Never feel embarrassed to simply ask, “So…are you more of a double kisser or are we aiming to break the Guinness Book of World Records here?” And for those of you who walk away with rather unsightly black and blue marks from people not abiding by the “no touching” principal in the last lesson, never hesitate to reinvigorate those rosy cheeks by drinking some Iberian wine. You’ll be amazed at the results!

5. Right, Left and Backwards

Just to make your life more difficult, if knowing how many kisses, and to whom, in which culture, is confusing enough, try remembering what side to start on! In Italy, you start right to left, but “…in Portugal, a woman usually adds a quick kiss on both cheeks (from your left to your right), but if you already know the person for a long time, a kiss and a quick hug will do the trick, ” says Jose Eduardo Silvia of Cortes de Cima.

Suggestion: Though there is a push to have the EU regulate the side for which one starts the kissing process in Europe, it has yet to gain traction. In part, this is because there a certain strategic advantage in keeping the surrounding countries in the dark as to which side you’re going to start on. So rest assured that everyone else is as confused as you are. Pick a pattern and stick with it.

6. Embrace Your Metrosexual Side

There are countries, and regions, throughout Europe where men greet one another with kisses on either cheek. “Unlike Portugal, Italian men kiss between them. This was a teachable moment when an Italian guy in the US suddenly started kissing me. I was so shocked that I stood speechless for several seconds,” confesses Oscar Quevedo of Quevedo Port Wine.

Suggestion: I’m sure you all realize that this norm was actually devised by hot Italian women who wanted their men to sympathize with their suffering when brushing up against scruffy, unshaven beards. So when you men walk away red, irritated and wishing for a bottle of cool Aloe Vera, know that females internationally are smiling with secret vengeance. And remember, if it’s good enough for David Beckham, it’s good enough for you.

7. When Continents Collide

Ironically, the number one situation where I find myself completely at a lost is when meeting a fellow expat. I’m generally the idiot who usually kisses when I’m supposed to hug, hug when I supposed to kiss, and shake hands when a wave is sufficient. “Sometimes if an expat meets another expat, it’s hard to gauge the correct number of kisses. If one wants to kiss more, just go ahead. We usually laugh about it afterwards!” says Thomas Perry of Inside Rioja.

Suggestion: Regardless if you’re meeting a German in Spain, a Spaniard in Norway or a Norwegian in France, be prepared to make a complete ass out of yourself no matter what you do.

8. Women Rule!

As a general rule, women have the universal power to dictate proximity. “The woman has to take charge to avoid any awkwardness…In Europe, I don’t have many problems. I usually kiss women and shake hands with men, especially in Southern Europe where a misunderstanding is common (heard of Latin lovers?). In Northern Europe, I just shake hands, period! In the States, I shake hand first and then I usually get “grabbed” at the end for a kiss,” admits Evelyne Resnick of Wine Brands Blog.

Suggestion: I have no idea where men learn the sly handshake to kiss maneuver, but I’ll admit that I’ve fallen prey to it every time! Women, watch out! If a guy looks suspiciously like John Travolta in “Staying Alive” and they start with the “innocent” hand extension, immediately thwart them with a curtsy. They’ll never know what hit them.

9. There are No Rules!

As much as I would love to tell you exactly what to do in each and every situation, greetings can vary dependent on one’s age, class, culture, region or personality. Hence, I prefer to take Wink Lorch‘s advice, “This is not an exact science at all and I’ve learned not to be embarrassed because I often get it ‘wrong’ and in the end, it doesn’t really matter as long as you smile.” Beautifully stated and completely accurate!

Suggestion: As much as you should be sensitive to cultural norms, realize that we’ve all unintentionally made out with our new international friends. Simply look at it as the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Best Wine to drink watching the World Cup Final
South Africa has a long but checkered winemaking heritage. During the 18^th and 19^th centuries, a South African dessert wine known as Constantia or Vin de Constance, made from the muscat grape, was a prized elixir and enjoyed strong international demand. The famed Vin de Constance went out of production around the turn of the 20^th century. It was revived in the mid-1980s after Duggie Jooste, a South African whose family had deep roots in the wine industry, purchased and restored the original estate.

You have to try this wine before you die - served chilled preferably in the company of a pretty woman. Tried this a couple of weeks ago at a wine tasting at the famous Clube de Jornalisas here in Lisbon, I am completely sold on this wine - in fact reckon this with the one I will be pickling myself in for my old age.

Bursting with notes of honey, orange marmalade, and pineapple, with ample acidity to offset its richness, the 2005 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance is a terrific dessert wine and one with an unusually interesting history.

My favorite tipple at the recent Peixe em Lisboa (Lisbon Fish & Flavours) an all Pescatarian’s annual April must visit Portuguese event – was this ever so good little one note Verdelho. This Domingos Soares Franco Private Collection Verdelho 2008 from JMF was literally so well liked by thirsty gourmets, chefs and discerning public that they literally drunk it dry at the Lisbon event and by the last day Sunday 18th April 2010 not a drop was to be had.

So if ever need a better recommendation to try a great white Portuguese wine take a tip from these picky European palates and track down a bottle ASP (as soon as possible or sooner) and pop its cork.

Check out the history of the Verdelho grape that has done a bit of a world walkabout, plus don’t do a double take when you find that some of Australia’s great white wines use the same grape variety.

A Toast to the Roast.

Portugal, like most southern European countries, is no stranger to the almighty espresso. In fact, café is so ingrained into the Portuguese lifestyle, culture and history that without this dark and robust beverage, the country would most certainly come to a complete halt! After the age of conquest, circa the 15th century, most of Portugal’s colonies turned out to be some of the great coffee bean producing regions of the world making the Portuguese are partially responsible for the universal success of coffee. After the great 1755 earthquake, the Marques de Pombal caused the creation of the first public cafes in Lisbon, these esteemed coffee houses became the meeting point for both famous Portuguese artists and politicians alike. For the next century, coffee became the main export of Brazil, founding many of the legendary Portuguese companies that still exist today.

Currently, there are approximately 12 leading coffee companies, and several small regional companies dotted throughout the country. As mentioned before, you can’t meander down a stone street without passing at least a handful of cafes.

Stop in a gourmet store, or even a supermarket, before you leave and get some of Portugal’s delicious coffee to take home with you!

Delta: Probably the largest and most renowned coffee brand in Portugal, Delta has graced Portugal for over 40 years and has gained its fame for its three high quality labels:

Delta Ouro (Gold)- selected from a lot of Arabica beans from the Americas and characteristic single vintage African Robustas. Intense and full-bodied.
Platina (Platinum)-from the best selected Arabicas and Robustas. Delicate aroma and smooth flavor.
Diamante (Diamond)- Taken from the best green coffee beans from the best origins and twice roasted in the Delta style. Rich aroma and incomparable flavor. This one is my all-time favorite, as it is of most Portuguese I asked who actually had a preference.

Taste Test: (Delta Regular) brewed well, strong aroma, light to medium bodied, somewhat smooth consistency; almost drinkable without sugar. Rating: 7/10

Nicola: This brand originated from Lisbon’s emblematic Cafe Nicola, popular with politicians and writers during the early 1800’s. It is now owned by Nestlé Portugal and the coffee beans come from Brazil, São Tomé and Principe. Nicola’s sugar packets have cute, motivational messages on them and “wish you a good coffee”.
Taste Test: brewed very well, balanced aroma, medium-full bodied, smooth flavor; can easily drink without sugar. Rating: 9/10

Café A Brasileira: One of the most famous cafes in Lisbon and a huge tourist destination. The brand has been around since the late 1800’s under different names, and the current name of the roasting and distribution company since 1906. The coffee beans come from (no surprise) Brazil.
Taste Test: brewed decently, bitter aroma, light bodied (thin), bitter flavor; cannot really drink without sugar. *Most expensive espresso by far at €1.50!* Not worth it.?Rating: 5/10

Tofa: Been around since the early 1960’s and is also owned by Nestlé Portugal. Coffee beans come from Angola. Sugar packets talk about Lisbon’s appreciation for coffee and has a pretty sketch of the trolley going along the street.?Taste Test: Brewed decently, robust aroma, light to medium bodied, strange intense, charcoal flavor and almost chemical aftertaste. Cannot drink without sugar, however this seemed to blend really well with just a tiny bit of sugar and made for quite a decent coffee afterward. Rating: 4/10 w/out sugar; 7/10 with sugar.

Sical: Been around since 1947, started as a coffee importer from Porto of pure roasts. They were acquired by Nestlé Portugal in 1987. Sical is the only brand that has cafes located down in all the Lisbon Metro stations as grab and go baristas without any seats. Coffee beans come from Angola.
Taste Test: brewed well, robust aroma, medium bodied, balanced, roasted flavor; can drink without sugar. Rating: 8/10

Look for these other well known Portuguese coffee brands as well: Buondi, Bicafé, Chave d’Ouro and Camello.

Here are the different types of coffee you can order in a Portuguese bar or restaurant:

Bica: Espresso shot
Café Pingado: A dripped coffee, served in a beaker with a bit of hot water.
Café Longo: Similar to a Café Pingado, but taller.
Galao:A Café Longo with the ratio of 1:3 milk in it. It can be foamed and/or steamed.
Garoto: Garoto also means "kid" and this drink is mostly milk and a favourite for children. It is made like a Galao but the coffee has been run through twice on the espresso machine and is weaker.

Madeira 2000 year old Nail Found

Nail from time of Christ’s crucifixion found in Madeira. A four-inch long nail thought to be one of thousands used in crucifixions across the Roman empire was discovered in Summer 2009 in a decorated box in a fort on the tiny isle of Ilheu de Pontinha, just off the coast of Madeira. Pontinha was thought to have been held by the Knights Templar, the religious order that was part of the Christian forces which occupied Jerusalem during the Crusades in the 12th century. The knights were part of the plot of Dan Brown’s best-selling novel, The Da Vinci Code.
Bryn Walters, an archaeologist, said the iron nail's remarkable condition suggested it had been handed with extreme care, as if it was a relic.
"It dates from the first to second centuries," he told the Daily Mirror.
While one would expect the surface to be "pitted and rough" he said on this nail the surface was smooth.
That suggested that many people had handled it over the centuries, with the acid on their hands giving it a "peculiar finish".
Christopher Macklin of the Knights Templar of Britannia said the discovery was "momentous".
He said the original Knights Templar may have thought it was one of the nails used in Christ's crucifixion.
The nail was found together with three skeletons and three swords.
One of the swords had the Knight Templar's cross inscribed on it.

Travel safety isn’t rocket science. In fact, when most people get into trouble or get hurt overseas it seems to be because they were doing something silly rather than any inherent danger. But some taboos are worse than others.
Wearing Too Much Bling – We’ve all seen them. They pull out their iPod to listen to some tunes while tapping away on their laptop which is downloading some great shots from their Nikon D1X. The funny thing is that they seem to be oblivious to the fact that they are flaunting too much wealth .

LISBON, Portugal -- Strolling along the broad Tagus River, its bridges vanishing San Francisco-style in the mist, I see a landscape that tumbles down the hills from blue skies and red-tiled roofs.

I'm falling in love.

With these romantic views, grand public squares, and tiled walkways, I decide that Lisbon is the most gracefully decorated city on Earth. That must be why the Portuguese capital, about the same size as metro Pittsburgh, boasts double the number of museums: Lisboans are all about the visuals.

The Gulbenkian Museum, a private art collection, may be the best known museum in town. But the new museums speak to the city's soul. The Orient, with an accent on Portugal's age of exploration, and the Tile Museum, housed in an opulent 16th-century convent, both opened in 2008. The Electricity Museum, an edgy answer to our local Mattress Factory or London's Tate Modern, has just hosted a blockbuster exhibit on the queen of fado, Amalia Rodrigues.

Inside, the Tile Museum captures the city's most iconic craft. Centuries before the 1755 earthquake that pulverized Portugal, Moorish conquerors adorned the city with geometric tiles called azulejos. Renaissance, artists added colorful fruits and flowers to the motif, applied throughout wealthy homes. In the 18th century, the style evolved into the delicate hand-painted blue-on-white designs that are a symbol of the city.

The collection includes a poignant historical image. A huge panorama of Lisbon, assembled in tile panels 35 feet long, depicts the city at the height of its wealth and power, in early 1755. A few months later, the earthquake left 100,000 dead. The widespread devastation of the terramoto, similar to the tragedy of current-day Haiti, shocked Europe and destroyed most of Lisbon's waterfront palaces and storehouses.

Lisbon: Great Navigators, Royalty, Fine Wine, & Culinary Delights

Lisbon is a vibrant city with numerous plazas, most with imposing sculptures of historical figures that can be found throughout this rather hilly city.

A network of old time cable cars shuttles locals and visitors alike up and down the hills and out to the waterfront area of Belem. From there a view of the Tagus River and the expansive 25th of April Bridge (often compared to the San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge as both were built by the same company) were awe-inspiring. Homage to the explorers of old, like Vasco de Gama, reminded us of the prowess of the Portuguese navigators.

The old castle is a testament to those times. One of the unique experiences in Lisbon is a ride in the 105 ft French designed Neo-Gothic iron Elevador de Santa Justa, which takes passengers from the Baixa area to the Alto Barrio neighborhood.
This old section of town is charming with its outdoor cafes and artists.

A visit to the near by Castle St George (Castelo de Sao Jorge) transported us back to the 12th century and the recapture of Lisbon from the Moors. Walking along the castle walls, I wondered what stories they would tell of times gone by. The panoramic views of the city from the castle are excellent.

Another gem in Lisbon is the Gulbenkian Museum named for the Turkish born Armenia oil magnet who sought political refuge in Portugal during WW II and subsequently left his extensive art collection to the city.

Enjoy the cuisine of Portugal, which is especially proud of the quality of their olive oil and their wines. Here the wine is cheaper than water, the beer is cold, the coffee is strong, the vegetables are delicious, the fish (loved that grilled Dourada) and seafood (great octopus - pulpo) are ‘off the boat’ fresh, and the pastries are ‘to die for’.

Life is good in Lisbon!

For authenticity, seek out the less touristy spots. Eat, drink and be merry with the locals. Don't forget to sit a while at the Cafe Brasiliera in Lisbon where poet Fernando Pessoa spent many a day with the intellectuals of his time.

Lisbon offers a wide variety of experiences, friendly people, great food and wine, and fado music. Travel with an open mind and be adaptable. And of course it’s always the people you met along the journey that make the real difference.

You know autumn has set in Lisbon when the chestnut trolleys roll out onto the streets, serving up the steaming, fresh-roasted snacks to ward off the chill and satiate hungry bellies throughout the colder months. Chestnuts have been a staple food of southern Europe for millennia. The healthy nuts are gluten-free, low in fat and high in vitamin C. But above all, they’re just GOOD. You’ll find them on street corners all over the city, particularly in the more central, bustling areas.
Senhor Eduardo (pictured) is proud to have been at it for 50 years, this gentle soul with bright blue eyes tells that four couples have approached him over the years to thank him for bringing them together. As it turns out, Sr. Eduardo became an unwitting matchmaker when they struck up a conversation while waiting in line for his chestnuts, and the rest is history.

So, yes, you may have to be patient while the production tries to keep up with demand, but the chestnuts are worth the wait. And, who knows, you might even come away with more than the dozen you’ve paid for! At 2 euro for a dozen for this hot treat it must be the best healthy bargain in Lisbon this Autumn.

It is a city that invites us to enjoy New art surrounded with flaming skyscrapers and Baroque Monuments.

In the old district Bairro Alto a series of steep descending streets invites us to the night life that contrasts with small "funky" shops, bars, and places of typical meals. The Portuguese kitchen is by means of green broths, seafood, fish, and it is said that they have in their cookbook up to 365 different ways of preparing salt cod.

For the epicures who have flocked to Alentejo in recent years, the region’s top draw is its cuisine. Its basic elements are wheat, olive oil, pork and certain fish, like cod, which the locals fry, bake and infuse with garlic and herbs in various glorious ways. Lamb and duck make luxurious appearances.

Aromatic cheeses range from the firm, nutty Nisa to the runny, fragrant Queijo da Serras. The regional wines can be sophisticated and interesting, from the robust reds of the Quinta do Carmo, jointly owned by the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), to lighter wines made from local trincadeira grapes.

Classics include queijo de Ovelha (an orange-crusted round of gooey sheep’s milk cheese), pato em molho de vinho tinto (duck in red wine sauce) and migas a Alentejana (fried pork with bread soaked in pork fat).

Compared with Spain, this place was even more charming, beautiful and about a third less expensive

the Alto Alentejo, a border province carpeted with cork oaks and olive trees in southeastern Portugal, emerge as a stylish backwater. The region’s name is derived from “Além-Tejo,” which means “beyond the Tagus,” the river that flows past Lisbon. A new blacktop highway now stretches eastward from Lisbon, and within an hour you’re admiring vineyards, the occasional whitewashed town or castle and gently rolling plains.

There is no shortage of historic sites in Alto Alentejo and one of the most beautiful is Marvão, a walled town that sits on a narrow spit of rock overlooking the rugged plains that reach across into Spain. Marvão is home to perfectly restored, whitewashed houses and a castle built in the ninth century as a Moorish fortification by Ibn Marwan.

You reach central Lisbon at the smart Chiado district, glimpses of the steely Tagus flashing into view between the terracotta roof tiles and church spires. Suddenly you pitch steeply downhill, the tram hissing and straining against the gradients of Rua Vitor Cordon, before veering into the historic downtown Baixa district. Shoppers pile in and it's standing room only for newcomers, but those already seated can admire the row of traditional shops selling sequins and beads along Rua da Conceicao through the open windows.
Now you climb past Lisbon's ancient cathedral and skirt the hilltop castle, the vistas across the Tagus estuary below truly dazzling. The best bit of the ride is yet to come though, a weaving, grinding climb through the Alfama district, Lisbon's village-within-a-city where most roads are too narrow for cars. Entering Rua das Escolas Gerais, the street is just over tram width, its shopfronts so close that you can almost lean out and take a tin of sardines off the shelves

Gulbenkian Museum | a Lisbon must-see

we visited the Gulbenkian Museum today during our tour of Lisbon. Clearly one of the most outstanding museums I have ever visited, I cannot recommend this highly enough.

While the scope of the Gulbenkian's art collection rivals that of the Louvre, the scale is ever so much more manageable. You can get an overview of the entire museum in just an hour, although longer visits would be well worthwhile. Instead of glazing over the thousands of relics from Egypt you might find at the Louvre or British Museum, visitors can view a few dozen exquisite pieces on display. Persian carpets, Mesopotamian and Greco-Roman artifacts, far eastern art pieces, illuminated manuscripts, Lalique creations, and a representative collection of 15th - 19th century western paintings make for a stunning experience.
